Creature/character design studies - Therese Larrson.

To begin understanding the principles of character design, I decided to look at one artist who is a great inspiration to me, Therese Larsson.

Here are some examples of her work below.

I have done master studies of her work in the past to understand her use of colour in her work as well as watched time-lapse videos of how her work is produced and even taken a lesson from her on SVS. Below are sketches I have done of some of her animal designs to help me better understand her use of shape language.

The best way to describe her work is animal "caricatures". The anatomy is very accurate, but the gesture and overall shape tend to be more exaggerated in areas in order to push a certain personality trait or movement, giving a more lively and animated look than the real creature. The artist pays close attention to the texture of the fur and the eyes in order to give the fur the sense that it can be touched and the eyes are able to convey a lot of expression.
